There’s more to a holiday than may be described in a warehouse full of travel leaflets. We definitely need breaks from work. But there’s even more to be said for a getaway break, leaving all standard routines behind and sampling a different life for a short while.

The advantages of taking a holiday start long before the cases are packed. It is something to anticipate and keeps long zones of routine form appearing unending. They’d only be a non-permanent staging post but looking a head to a vacation gives us the sense that whatever’s taking place currently has a stopping point in sight. We somehow expect to feel differently after and are sometimes proved right. It’s no coincidence that companies often use away-breaks to revive incentive and team relations.

If you are able to turn off and leave everyday patterns behind, when you come back you frequently view old scenarios with fresh eyes and see them in a new light. If nothing else, noticing how your thoughts or mood can change on holiday proves that it is possible to feel differently. Yet taking a breather is only part of the picture. Folk don’t vanish while on holiday or go into postponed animation. We are still thinking and feeling the entire time we’re away. What actually makes the difference isn’t simply getting away from the old grind, it’s having the ability to do something else instead. We’d talk to folks we would not routinely meet, try sports we’d not do otherwise and discover interests we never knew we had.

Holidays also permit us to target the present in a way that is tough to do at home. When you are in a new environment for a short space of time, your attention tends to be on what’s occuring at the moment and in the subsequent few days. Sight-seeing, walks and other fun activities keep our minds even more in the here-and-now. This does much more that offer a few agreeable experiences. Being “in the moment” is in itself one of the keys to relaxation, and this occurs more naturally on holiday.

But as handy as they’re for the future, holidays can be even more vital for the past. Like major vacations and the change of seasons, holidays punctuate a year and give it a unqiue personality. Ask somebody about a certain period and they’ll identify it by going back over landmark events. Holidays are one of these markers. You frequently hear folk recall, as an example, that “it was the year we went to Disneyland” or “right after we got back from camping”. Family holidays can be some of clearest memories folks have from their childhoods and crucial parts of a family’s shared history.

Over time our vacations add color and richness to our private life story. Each holiday is an expedition full of potential findings. Maybe more than the rest, holidays let us lift our eyes up from the familiar trail we tread so we will look round and see that there is a world out there.
